never ignore❗

Hello folks!

Welcome to my second blog.

This time we are going to deal with mathematics.

As you may know, some of the maths problems have been creating internet sensations over time, but this time it is pretty different because of the following seemingly easy problem which may make you run into sweat.

The above pictures is actually a tweet which went viral a few days ago. It’s because of the peculiarity and the confusing aspects of the problem.

Well, you may like to give a try before I explain it’s solution.

The solution of this problem goes something like this…

The correct answer is 120 and 5! as well.
Yeah, it is 5! not 5. Let me solve this problem by applying the BODMAS (Bracket, Of, Division, Multiplication, Addition & Subtraction) rule.

Given problem:

230-220×0.5 = 230-110 = 120 = 5×4×3×2×1 = 5!

The symbol (!) is interpreted as exclamatory mark in English but in maths it is called factorial function.

Well, it may be a new thing for you but it’s interesting, just bear with me for a while more.

If n is any non-negative integer
Then, n! =n×(n-1)×(n-2)×(n-3)…..×3×2×1 (exception: 0 doesn’t follow this rule)

E.g. 4!=4×3×2×1=24
Similarly, 5!=5×4×3×2×1=120 (Ta da! here’s the answer)

In the same way,

3!=3×2×1, 2!=2×1, 1!=1
0!=1 (but how?)
(click the link given a few steps below)

Applications:
Suppose you have 6 different flower saplings and 6 identical flower pots kept in a straight queue.
And you are asked that in how many different ways can you plant the 6 different saplings in the 6 identical flower pots, planting one in each of the pots?
The answer is 6! (=720)

Isn’t that a cool thing?

Well, this problem teaches us the sometimes easy problems may trick you hard. So, we must be careful while solving problems in maths. It also teaches that we should never ignore an exclamatory mark (❗) in a maths problem.

(for those who think why did I post a maths problem on a science blog site, I must say that you should know the definition of maths. According to it, maths is also a branch of science).

By the way, don’t forget to get an email subscription (secret: it’s absolutely free 😉) and also leave a comment below.

Thanks for your precious time.

Have a great day! 🎉
